Primary draws record number of Republicans

The Louisiana Secretary of State’s website reports that 186,377 Republicans cast a ballot in Saturday's (March 24) primary.  That’s a record for voter turnout in a Louisiana GOP primary, according to the Republican Party of Louisiana.

Time running out to claim Citizens rebate money

Just days left to apply for your share of more than $250 miIlion in insurance rebates stemming from hurricane Katrina.

The rebates are available through the Citizens Insurance Rebate Program.  That is the state-run insurer of last resrot that will write a policy when a tratdtional insurance company will not.  After Katrina, the state borrowed billions of dollars to pay out Citizen's claims.  The rebates come in because Citizens collected more that it  needed to pay those claims.  Now that money gets refunced back to you.

Ales elected National DNC Committeeman

The Louisiana Democratic State Central Committee recently elected John Ales, an attorney from Baton Rouge, as national DNC committeman.

Ales is a Democratic State Central Committee member and is also on the Rules and Bylaws Committee.  The National DNC Committeeman represents Louisiana on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and is an important liaison between the national Democratic committees and the state party.

"As a former DNC Committeeman myself, I want to congratulate John Ales on his election as DNC Committeeman for Louisiana," said Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Buddy Leach.  "I look forward to working with John as we rebuild the Democratic Party in Louisiana and I know John will fight for the resources Louisiana Democrats need."

"I am deeply honored to have been selected by my fellow Louisiana Democrats as their National DNC Committeeman," Ales said. "I will represent Louisiana's values on the Democratic National Committee and will join my fellow Democrats in stopping the Republican attacks on Social Security, Medicare and working families in Louisiana."

Schedler speaks to Port Allen rotary club

The Port Allen Rotary Club recently hosted Secretary of State Tom Schedler. Schedler spoke about the dynamics of his office and his mission for the next four years.

Schedler was sworn in as secretary of state on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, when then-Secretary of State Jay Dardenne was sworn in as lieutenant governor. Schedler was appointed first assistant secretary of state in December of 2007 by Dardenne. Schedler was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 1996 and served three terms representing Senate District 11 which covers parts of St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parishes.

He was recently elected to  a full term.

Governor announces more appointments

Governor Bobby Jindal recently announced the appointments of Elizabeth Murrill as Executive Counsel, Stafford Palmieri as Policy Director, Matt Parker as Intergovernmental Affairs Director and Taylor Teepell as Deputy Legislative Affairs Director.

 Elizabeth Murrill will replace Stephen Waguespack who was appointed Chief of Staff to the Governor and Stafford Palmieri will replace Jonathan Ringo who is pursuing an opportunity in the private sector. Toye Taylor, who served as Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, is leaving to pursue an opportunity in the private sector.

 Elizabeth Baker Murrill, originally of Lafayette, LA, most recently served as interim Executive Counsel in the Office of the Governor. Prior to serving as interim Executive Counsel, Murrill served as Deputy Executive Counsel in the Office of the Governor. Previously, Murrill served in Washington, D.C. as a United States Supreme Court Judicial Fellow assigned to the Federal Judicial Center. She also practiced law in the private sector and served nine years as an assistant professor of Professional Practice at LSU Law School.
