4-H camp will be held June 11 to 15

4-H camp will be held June 11 to 15

East Feliciana Parish 4-H’ers will be camping this summer from June 11 to 15.  It is open to fourth through sixth grade boys and girls.

Camping is one of the most valuable experiences a child can have. It’s a learning experience that helps boys and girls appreciate the outdoors, live together as a group, get along with others and appreciate people with different interests and backgrounds.  Many 4th, 5th and 6th grade boys and girls participate in 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The camp is held at the LSU AgCenter’ s Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center, an 80-acre campsite located near Pollock, La., on Highway 8 about 15 miles northeast of Alexandria.

One of the important things children learn from camp is to be self-sufficient. That is, they learn they can survive for four whole days on their own. The camp week lasts four days and starts on Monday afternoon, when the boys and girls arrive, and ends on Friday morning after breakfast. The first meal served at camp is supper on Monday night.

Department of Education issues guidelines for voucher program

Department of Education issues guidelines for voucher program

Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) officials are sending out registration packets this week to schools to apply to participate in the voucher program and parents can start applying for the scholarships next month.

Governor Bobby Jindal recently signed House Bill 976 into law.  Among other options, the legislation provides state-funded scholarships to students attending C, D, and F schools to enroll in state-approved nonpublic schools or A and B public schools outside their district or attendance zone.

The schools will be notified of their eligibility within one week of submitting their application. LDOE will post the list on its website, continually updating it as schools qualify for the program.

Meanwhile, parents can start applying for vouchers on Tuesday, May 22.

Port Allen Rotary presents check to food bank

Port Allen Rotary presents check to food bank

Russell Daigle, a volunteer with the Port Allen Food Pantry, was honored to receive a check for $4,000 on behalf of the Food Pantry from the Port Allen Rotary Club at the Club’s meeting on Tuesday, March 6. The donation was a portion of the Club’s annual golf tournament fundraiser held each fall. Daigle has been a volunteer with the Food Pantry for many years and spoke about how the donation will help those in need in the local community.

He explained that the Port Allen Food Pantry receives a monthly donation of food from the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, but there are other expenses to help meet the nutritional needs of families receiving assistance from the Port Allen Food Pantry. He and the other volunteers will use the donated funds to purchase additional supplies such as rice, peanut butter and jelly, cereal or other staples to help families.

"No such thing as impossible bike ride"

"No such thing as impossible bike ride"

Wheels to Succeed, a program sponsored by the McMains Children’s Developmental Center, will be having its Fourth annual "No Such Thing as Impossible Bike Ride" in St. Francisville on March 25.   Adult rides start at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The bike ride is a fundraiser which is used to purchase three-wheeled specially adapted bikes for children with physical disabilities. Since the beginning of the Wheels to Succeed program in 2007, 44 bikes have been given to children with disabilities in the southern Louisiana area.

With the support of local businessman, author, and philanthropist Jairo Alvarez, this bike ride helps raise much of the money used to buy adapted bikes. Adults can register at www.active.com to participate in the 10-mile, 46-mile or 74-mile rides, but kids of all ages and abilities can participate at noon for the ride around West Feliciana Sports Park.

There will be a Freedom Concepts booth set up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
