Program to commemorate 100th anniversary of 1912 flood

Program to commemorate 100th anniversary of 1912 flood

By Brian Costello

Flanked by three major rivers and located at the point where forty percent of the nation’s water funnels into the Lower Mississippi Valley, Pointe Coupee Parish has been both  blessed and cursed by the Mississippi River and its sister streams. The rich alluvium deposited by the rivers is responsible for the amazing fertility of the parish’s soil, but man’s attempt to harness the rivers by levees was thwarted numerous times in Pointe Coupee history.

May 1 will mark the 100th anniversary of the most devastating and deadliest of the 18 major floods which struck Pointe Coupee Parish between 1780 and 1927. The  1912 flood resulted from the crevasse or levee break at Torras in extreme northeastern Pointe Coupee.

In commemoration of the 1912 flood and in memory of its victims known and unknown, a powerpoint presentation of vintage images of the flood and its effects will be given by historian, author and archivist Brian J. Costello at historic St. Stephen’s Church in Innis at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 31. Co-hosted by the Pointe Coupee Historical Society, the congregation of St.

Firefighters offer holiday safety tips

Firefighters offer holiday safety tips

The holidays are here and St. George Fire Protection District officials want you to have a safe and enjoyable time. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

There are more house fires on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. Most of those fires stem from inattentive cooking. Never leave cooking food unattended.

Keep clutter and loose clothing away from the stove.

Turn pot handles in and away from children’s reach.

Make sure those cooking appliances you may only use once or twice a year are in good working order.

Don’t overload electric outlets. Unplug appliances when not in use.

If a fire flares up in the oven, don’t open the oven door. Turn the oven off and call 9-1-1.

Don’t throw water on a grease fire. Instead, cover the burning pan with a lid.

Use pot holders to prevent burns.

If you fry turkeys, do it away from the house.

Never put a partially frozen turkey into hot oil.

Observe the “three foot rule” when decorating. Never place combustible items within three feet of ANY open flame or source of heat.

Make sure your Christmas Tree is fresh.
