Investigation Discovery profiles Jennings murders

Investigation Discovery profiles Jennings murders

Crime Author William Phelps travels to Jennings to investigate the murder of eight girls during a four-year period.

"Brutal Bayou" will air on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at  10 p.m. It's part of a new series called "Dark Minds" on the Investigation Discovery network.

Between 2006 and 2009, eight girls were killed and dumped on the lonely backroads. Girls some say were from the wrong side of the tracks… the bad lands of drugs and poverty.

Residents think a serial killer is on the loose. Whoever killed them is still out there, meaning that any day, another innocent girl could join the ranks of The Brutal Bayou murders.

The victims share two things — they were all high when they died, and many of them hung out at a party house on the seamy south side of town. But they're different races, and they were killed in different sadistic ways. Are police sure it's a serial killer?

It's hard to say. Townspeople are suspicious of the cops, accusing them of corruption, dirty tactics and trickery, so in the absence of an arrest, rumors and conspiracies rule the day.

Former New Roads Mayor sentenced to 11 years

Former New Roads Mayor  Tommy Nelson who was found guilty on seven counts of racketeering,  wire fraud, making false statements, and interstate commerce, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison. He must report to prison on Feb. 20.

Judge Brian Jackson handed down the sentence just moments ago according to WAFB's Jim Shannon.

"It's still the wrong sentence," said Nelson's Attorney Paige Pate.  "I think we have a very strong case for appeal. I think the judge made some calculations on sentencing guidelines that were not correct. It's is clear black letter law that you cannot hold someone accountable for all these numbers the government made up."

Nelson was accused of taking bribes from undercover agents promoting a fake garbage can cleaning business.

A jury deliberated for just over an hour in June before returning the verdict. Shannon will have more details coming up at 5, 6, and 10.

Officials recognizing Amber Alert anniversary

Officials recognizing Amber Alert anniversary

Every year, the nation pauses to remember Amber Hagerman, the namesake of the national Amber Alert program.  Amber was abducted and murdered on Jan. 13, 1996. Since the origination of the national initiative, moe than 550 children have been successfully recovered as a direct result of the Amber Alert.

Louisiana has one recognized statewide Amber plan that is coordinated and administered by the Louisiana State Police. It is a statewide, collaborative effort between law enforcement and broadcasters focused on safely locating an abducted child within the critical two to three hour period following abduction.  It is an investigative tool which supplements law enforcement efforts to locate an abducted child whose life is in immediate danger.   Since the inception of the Louisiana Amber Alert Plan in October 2002, there have been only twelve activations.  In all cases, the children were successfully recovered.
